Sunday 8th July, coaches Emma and George took three of our youngest weightlifters to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry to take part in their very first weightlifting competition.
For two of our youngest lifters, and CrossFit Future Fittest Athletes 2018, Archie and Isla, competing in the Under 11yrs age category, although they are very experienced CrossFitters, they had only trained specifically weightlifting for two weeks before this competition. Unfortunately there are not many BWL organised events in the South of England, so the coaches decided this would be an excellent opportunity for experience and to help the kids decide if weightlifting was something they wanted to pursue.
We turned up to the fantastic Ricoh Arena and settled in for a few hours before weigh in time and to fill the parents up on coffee! Although stepping on the scales is a very daunting experience for most adults, the kids took it very much in their stride.
After weigh in we had some time to meet and greet with Commonwealth Gold Medallist Gareth Evans, and the kids got to take some selfies for their instagram profiles! Gareth was absolutely brilliant and very inspirational again, as he was when we met him with the last group of kids at Reebok CrossFit Connect when he and Sonny Webster were doing a tour of the UK for Help the Heroes. We also got to see some incredible lifting in the main arena from the Para Powerlifting Series.
First up to the platform was Miss Isla, as she had the lowest opening weight, she was the first to go. It was a very nervous moment, as she held the attention of the whole room she absolutely nailed her first Snatch, pretty much setting the tone for the whole day! The butterflies settled and the weights went up. With three attempts at Snatch each and then Clean & Jerk, the final lifts for the under 11s were as follows…
The focus given by Coach George for today for the Titan Strength kids was to hit 6 out of 6 lifts. Isla and Archie missed just one lift each, which for their first ever competition, both coaches were happy with.
Jack being a little bit older has had a bit more weightlifting experience, and has been coming to weightlifting club on a Sunday with Coach Monkey now for about a year. The under 13s were also scored for technique on each lift out of 8 points. Jack was the first lifter of the day to be awarded an 8 point lift! Jacks results as follows…
All in all, this was a great event for the kids, well organized by BWL and run very smoothly, they got what the coaches wanted out of it and that is experience. It will give them something to focus on and a reason to get up and train on those early Sunday mornings. If only Coach Emma could have loaded those bars a bit faster then we all would have been home an hour earlier!!
None of this would be possible without Coach George, who we want to thank massively for his time and effort he gives up for these kids. A big thank-you also to Coach Monkey, who drills away at the kids technique every Sunday morning with our Youth development weightlifting squad.
